As a September baby, I make the most of these natural spectacles and stack my Insta feed with colour by heading down to some of the best places in Berlin to see the fall foliage.
You can find this park on the opposite side of the Spree on Museums island, surrounded by historical buildings and monuments like Altes Museum, the Berliner Dom and the Deutsches Historisches Museum. The scenery turns gold-tinged in the fall and there’s no better place to stretch your legs as you watch boats pass by on the river.
If you’d like to visit a park out of a storybook, this should be your go-to. The Charlottenburg Palace is surrounded by a large garden and hosts the most idyllic scenery in Berlin, including a pond where you can see the castle’s image reflected in its waters. As cheesy as it sounds, the burnt orange leaves on the deciduous trees transform the landscape into a fairy tale.
If you’re one for a view, this is definitely the best place to see Tiergarten’s colourful canopy from above. From the panoramic platform on top of the column, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Berlin and the Straße des 17. Juni, a boulevard lined with yellow- and red-leafed trees which splits the Tiergarten into two sections.
Walk up the hill until you’ve reached the waterfall. There you’ll find an amazing panoramic view of the city center, including rows of yellow-orange trees of Grossbeerenstrasse.
On the corner of Wisbyer Strasse in the northern area of Prenzlauer Berg, you’ll find a residential block from the 1930s and one of the most instagrammable autumnal spots in Berlin. Turned into a palette spanning from green to yellow, with tones of red and orange, it offers strong competition to the residential buildings next to Rudolph-Wilde-Park. That said, nothing beats the in-between building on Friedrichsgracht. This “surviving building” ended up sandwiched between typical post-war East German constructions and is almost completely covered in leaves! Aside from all that colour, it’s a great place to admire the unique clash of architecture in Berlin.
