The pleasure of slow living in a capital city—our newest Roman property, Verson- perfectly encapsulates the feeling. Located in Trastevere, one of Rome's most famous neighbourhoods, Verso’s warm modern minimalism takes its inspiration from the city and neighbourhood itself. Beauty, elegant rooms and suites, traditions, excellent cuisine, unspoiled nature and calm within a usually bustling city are waiting for you at Verso. With its narrow cobblestone streets, colourful buildings dripping with ivy and balconies enlivened with geraniums, Trastevere is one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in Rome—and Verso is nested right in the middle of it.
Close your eyes and picture this: beautiful marble staircases, large windows and French balconies with a touch of modern Italian architecture of the 50s and 60s. Open your eyes again (how did you read that with your eyes closed?): you’re at Verso. Relaxed and less chaotic than other parts of Rome, Verso lures in travellers and locals alike. Although Trastevere is more about strolling the streets, people-watching in piazzas and meeting friends for dinner and drinks, you can always decide to stay in and take it easy (and visit the lounge that awaits you at the property). Verso’s versatility (sorry) in Trastevere makes it one of the best places to stay in Rome, especially for first-time visitors. It’s your stepping stone into Rome, and our hotel concept makes it even easier. We're fully digital, so there's no hassle, reception lines or staff at Verso. Instead, you’ll use a digital check-in and PIN code to access the property and its rooms. This modern approach to hospitality offers the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, making your stay at Verso truly something different.
Fishermen and sailors once flocked to Trastevere due to its proximity to the Tiber River. In fact, the name Trastevere comes from two Italian words that mean "across the Tiber (river)", and this is because the neighbourhood is just across the Tiber from the rest of the city. With the Imperial age, money came into the district and influential figures like Julius Caesar chose to build luxurious villas in the area. This mix of wealth combined with architecture from the Middle Ages gives Trastevere its irresistible charm. The whole area gives off more of a small-town vibe than a capital city, and the apartments are super centrally located—the historical centre, the Vatican and the Colosseum all within a 30-minute walk. Over the years, the beans have been spilt about the area, and at times, there seem to be more foreigners than Romans. Restaurant tables spill out onto the streets during summer, and the atmosphere is festive. Despite this, it's still possible to escape the crowd, and the further you get from the river, the quieter it is. As with many cities in Italy, wandering down side streets is rewarding.
Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is the main square and is a must-see attraction as you stroll around the area's beautiful cobbled backstreets. Home to one of the oldest churches in Rome and a primary hangout in the evening to watch street performers and entertainers, there's no doubt you'll fall in love with this square the moment you set foot in it. You'll find the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere within the Piazza. The church as you see it now mainly dates back to the 12th century, with its tall campanile (bell tower) and embellished facade with golden mosaics. The church sits on its original fourth-century foundation, and its interior is worth seeing. For a taste of local food and life, walk south of Piazza Sant Maria, and you'll find a fresh food market in Piazza di San Cosimato. The market has been open since the beginning of the 20th century and many of the local vendors you see today are descendants of the first. Today, it is less than abundant but still rich in quality foods and great prices. It's a great place to pick up some cheese—always ask what they recommend. A total Rome hidden gem, this market’s the perfect place to grab some fresh ingredients to take home, where you can use the fully equipped kitchenettes at Verso to whip up something tasty.. It's not to be missed—especially because you'll be buying your produce in a place that was once walled off, flooded and used for naval battles. Pretty cool.
With its appealing old-world vibes, cobbled streets filled with clusters of shops, bars, restaurants, and old buildings with exposed woodwork, Trastevere is a fascinating place to explore. Make Verso your cosy nook in the centre of bustling Rome. What're you waiting for?
